French River Muskie Legend That Got Away (For Now)

Hi Brenda and Bears Den Team,

Just wanted to extend a sincere thanks for an incredible and memorable trip to the French River. The highlight of course was the tale of the legend that got away (for now). While reeling in a hammer handle sized pike a giant musky shot up from the depths and grabbed on to the fish. I had the excitement of believing there would be a chance to land this behemoth even though it was not actually hooked but just holding on to its mid morning snack.

For roughly 5-6 minutes I carefully fought the monster musky in which time my brother and I had the privilege to see it up close a couple of times. Unfortunately, when the musky was close to the surface it was not nearly ready to be netted (would likely not have fit into the large net we had). Finally, the musky must have realized that it could let go of its intended meal and we were left with only a fish story.

Interestingly enough, when it let go of the pike my brother Steve immediately started to figure eight his Mepps Marabou Bucktail and managed to draw the musky’s attention. But, he couldn’t entice it enough to clamp onto his lure.  On the bright side, we know for certain that the giants of the French River are still out there and we are determined to return again soon for a rematch!

Sincerely,
